In 1888, the crew of a ship reported that a large white “fish” had guided them through a dangerous stretch of water in the Marlborough Sounds.
Eventually the “fish” was identified as a Risso’s dolphin, extremely rare in New Zealand waters. For more than 24 years, Pelorus Jack guided the ships daily without fail. The friendly white dolphin became famous worldwide. People travelled from all over to see him play alongside their ship, including celebrities and royalty.
